Halfway up the mountain leading to the Sacra di San Michele in the Susa Valley stands the Convent of San Francesco, commonly known as the Certosa, a beautiful building nestled in the woods, a place of reflection, silence, and prayer for centuries. The Certosa1515 revolves around a church consecrated in 1521. Bridging Earth and Heaven is the aspiration and mission of this place, which for almost 500 years has been a center of contemplation and prayer. The conventual church still preserves part of its 16th-century fresco decoration in the side chapels, the facade tympanum, and the lunette above the entrance. The iconographic program reflects the centrality of the figure of the Virgin Mary in the theological conception of the founder, Blessed Tommaso Illirico. The only difference from the original structure is the transformation of the first central bay, raised and completed with a dome in the second half of the 18th century.
