Via sant'Agostino 5, 10051 Avigliana
The Church of Sant’Agostino is located near the current city hospital on the edge of Monte Piocchetto, near a rich linden wood that was a well-kept park during the presence of the Jesuits between the late 1800s and the early 1970s.
The church was erected around 1470 as an Augustinian convent on the pre-existing Church of Misericordia, and the Blessed Cherubino was the first novice and priest to die there in a reputation of sanctity and was buried in that church. Throughout the centuries, it has had various vicissitudes: during the Napoleonic era, the complex was suppressed and later given to the Jesuits to restore its religious functions due to the city's demographic expansion resulting from industrialization.
Upon the departure of the Jesuits, the church became part of the hospital complex, which used it as a storage area and part of the healthcare complex. Thanks to the association Gli Amici di Avigliana and the will of the Municipality of Avigliana, the church and the attached mount have been nominated for the FAI Places of the Heart campaign of 2020, achieving an excellent result, 89th place and 4436 signatures in favor. This has allowed the place to be accessible for guided tours, scheduled openings with the association's volunteers, and access to future restorations. The church features some original ornaments, including the complete polychrome chalk Stations of the Cross, the walnut pulpit, the fresco of the Blessed Cherubino in the central dome, and Rodolfo Morgari's painting from 1892. The original wooden choir from the 1500s is preserved in other religious buildings.
