Via San Pietro, 10051 Avigliana

The Church of San Pietro stands not far from the homonymous village, connected by a staircase, and is surrounded by the ancient cemetery. Of ancient foundation, in 1205 it passed from the jurisdiction of the provostship of Oulx to that of the hospice of Mont Cenis. The internal fresco decoration is the result of stratifications ranging from the 11th to the 17th century. The Apostles and the Christ in the almond-shaped mandorla of the apse were repainted between 1348 and 1362 by the so-called Master of Tommaso d'Acaia, the prelate who commissioned the cycle. In the right apse, the Alexandrian painter Giacomo Pitterio was active at the end of the 14th century. In the right nave, there is a Pietà dating back to 1469 attributed to Antoine de Lonhy, a Toulouse artist residing in Avigliana in 1462. Instead, the chapel at the head of the left nave, with the Stories of St. Joseph and Mary Magdalene, is attributed to the workshop of the Serra from Pinerolo.
