Val Fredda, 10052 Bardonecchia
The ZSC Val Fredda extends over an area of 1686 hectares in the Dora di Bardonecchia basin and encompasses almost the entire Val Fredda, a side valley of the Valle di Rochemolles in the municipalities of Oulx and Bardonecchia.
It develops in a high mountain environment, characterized by rocks, scree, and meadows, and only to a minimal extent by forest consisting of patches of larch-pine and very localized subalpine shrublands. There are plant species of some interest, such as Campanula alpestris, Leontopodium alpinum, and Veronica allionii, included in the national Red List. In this area, there are many wet rhododendron groves, which host many species of butterflies that are highly threatened throughout the alpine arc, such as Colias palaeno, Albulina optilete, Aricia nicias, Parnassius phoebus. It is also the ideal habitat for typically alpine fauna such as the black grouse, mountain hare, ptarmigan, ermine, eagle, and chamois.
