Buttigliera Alta
In an atmosphere suspended between historical reality and imagination, inspired by The Name of the Rose, the Preceptory of Sant’Antonio di Ranverso opens its doors to a unique role-playing experience set in the Middle Ages, amidst cloisters, relics, and folk legends.
“The Mysteries of Ranverso – The Trail of Temptation” is an original adventure written by Departments & Dragons from the University of Turin, with contributions from the gaming association Fortunadado. It is specially designed for the evocative Gothic complex. The initiative is part of the European Heritage Days (EHD).
The game is based on Rosewood Abbey, a title created by Kalum and published in Italy by Grumpy Bear, built on the narrative system Carved from Brindlewood (PbtA), where mysteries unfold during gameplay with no predetermined ending.
The story begins on the morning of Saint Anthony’s Day, when a strange footprint is discovered near the cloister. Players, stepping into the roles of the Frates Herodoti, are called to investigate: through rumors, symbols, and interrogations, they will uncover the secret behind its appearance.
Throughout the adventure—set in the most emblematic spaces of the Preceptory—they may virtually encounter real historical figures, such as the painter Giacomo Jaquerio or the preceptor Jean de Montchenu, alongside fictional characters created to intertwine with the site's authentic history.
Role-playing games are powerful tools that, through fiction and interaction, can be used to explore aspects of the mind, emotions, and human behavior. They stimulate creativity, memory, problem-solving, and adaptability. The fact that all this takes place in a space so rich in art and history as Ranverso—which becomes both setting and vessel—adds an extraordinary dimension to experiencing and understanding the Preceptory in an even more immersive way.
For participants, the day’s schedule includes:
- 11:30 AM: Meet-up with a guided tour of the Preceptory
- Lunch: Packed lunch in the cloister (brought by participants)
- 2:00–6:00 PM: Role-playing game session
