Buttigliera Alta

The night of San Lorenzo falls on August 10th because it was on that date, in 258 AD, that Lorenzo was grilled to death at the behest of Emperor Valerian. Coinciding with this event, the celestial event of shooting stars, first observed in 36 AD, occurred. These shooting stars have since been associated with the saint's martyrdom, interpreted as the tears of San Lorenzo during his torture. What "falls" from the sky are not actually stars, but the Perseid meteor shower, debris of dust and ice left behind by the Swift-Tuttle comet as it passes around the sun.

On the night of the Perseids, at the Preceptory of Sant'Antonio di Ranverso, on Sunday, August 10th, an evening of naked-eye stargazing is scheduled, allowing you to discover the sky and its wonders, guided by an astrophysicist, in collaboration with Infini.TO (Turin Planetarium). A special opportunity to visit the Preceptory at night, learn about the history of the Antonian order, and admire the artistic masterpieces it houses.
