Viva Jaquerio! is a special visit to learn about the life, work, and artist's workshop of one of Piedmont's leading exponents of the International Gothic style, who left his signature and his greatest masterpiece in Ranverso.
Born around 1375 in Turin to a family with a long tradition of painting, Giacomo Jaquerio spent the first part of his life constantly moving between Turin, Geneva, Thonon-les-Bains, and other places beyond the Alps, working in the service of Amadeus VIII of Savoy and receiving commissions from religious institutions and important noble families. From 1429 onward, he lived permanently in Turin. Of his vast output, only a few works are documented. The first certain document relating to Jaquerio is his signature, discovered only in 1914 on the frescoes of the Abbey of Sant'Antonio di Ranverso, dating back to around 1410, a period when the artist must have already been at the head of a large workshop. The Ascent to Calvary is his masterpiece, characterized by markedly realistic tones of cruelty and pain, making it a pictorial piece of great dramatic tension.
