Fortifications
The Susa Valley is not just about mountains to climb, meadows, and forests to explore. As you stroll through the towns and villages, you will discover traces of the history of this territory, which, due to the presence of numerous alpine passes, hosts numerous military structures, residences, and fortifications perched on spectacular cliffs or atop gentle hills.
A magical atmosphere where time has stopped, amidst military architectures shrouded in the mystery of the past. In a variety of styles, ranging from the Middle Ages to World War II, our territory is made even more special by the harmonious contrasts between ancient and modern: the tower and the fortified area of San Mauro in Almese take us back to 1029, while the Exilles Fort is about a hundred years newer. The Bramafam Fort in Bardonecchia, on the other hand, testifies to the will to protect the outlet of the Fréjus tunnel against possible attacks by the French in the last decades of the 19th century.
