From March 28th to May 24th, the community film and cultural festival will bring several municipalities in the Susa Valley to life with a rich program, focusing on the themes of historical memory, the mountains, the environment, and civic engagement.
The program includes events in eight municipalities in the Susa Valley—Almese, Avigliana, Caprie, Chianocco, Condove, Oulx, San Giorio, and Villar Focchiardo—and in Turin (on April 25th at the Museo Diffuso della Resistenza), with the involvement of four schools and a network of over 30 local associations and organizations.
The 30th edition of the Valsusa Filmfest is dedicated to Fabrizio De André, a singer and poet of the poor, an artist capable of giving voice to injustice, marginalized communities, and the fragile beauty of nature, whose work continues to represent an ethical and cultural benchmark for the festival.
Thirty years after its founding, the resistant spirit of the Valsusa Filmfest is still alive. Founded in 1997 by Armando Ceste, a Turin-based director and visual artist, with the involvement of ANPI Valle di Susa, the Piero Gobetti Study Center, the Habitat Environmental Committee, Gruppo 33 Condove, and the Italian Meteorological Society, the festival has continued for three decades, becoming a permanent laboratory of culture, memory, and civic participation.
As per tradition, the festival features screenings of competing and non-competing works, performances, concerts, book presentations, and meetings with special guests, involving schools, associations, local governments, and citizens.
The 30th Valsusa Filmfest is organized by the Valsusa Filmfest Association with the support and collaboration of the Piedmont Region – Department of Culture, the Metropolitan City of Turin, the Compagnia di San Paolo Foundation, the Unione Montana Valle Susa, and the participating municipalities.
MEETING WITH MAURO PAGANI

During the evening, Pagani will present, together with director Cristiana Mainardi, the documentary "Andando dove non so – Mauro Pagani, una vita da fuggiasco," winner of the 2026 Nastro d'Argento for Best Documentary in the "Music" special selection. The film recounts a delicate moment in the artist's life and the journey of rebuilding his identity after a temporary memory loss.

THE BRUNO CARLI AWARDS
Each year, the festival honors Bruno Carli, a partisan and the first president of the Valsusa Filmfest association, with the eponymous award, presented to representatives of organizations committed to defending human rights and the environment. The award is divided into two categories.
The national Bruno Carli Award
The award will be presented on Sunday, April 19th, at Robinson Park in Almese (at 5:30 pm) to the entire population of Palestine. The ceremony will be accompanied by a musical theater reading and the photography exhibition "Parlami di Gaza" (Tell Me About Gaza), by and featuring Ahmad Jarboa (a Palestinian nurse and photographer who survived the genocide), Mervat Alramli (a Palestinian screenwriter and set designer born in Gaza), and Mohammed AbusenJer (a Palestinian musician who survived the genocide). Several families displaced from Gaza will be in attendance.
The local Bruno Carli Award will be presented on Friday, April 24th, at Taverna Tortuga in Chianocco (at 6:15 pm) to members of the Turin-Lyon Technical Commission of the Unione Montana Valle Susa, who have dedicated their efforts to serving the Susa Valley community for thirty years. The ceremony will be accompanied by a performance of songs by Fabrizio De André by the Duo Enrico and Riccardo Cacciatori.
MARIO SOLDATI AND THE SUSA VALLEY
On the 120th anniversary of Mario Soldati's birth, a meeting will be held on Friday, May 15, at 9:00 PM at Cascina Roland in Villar Focchiardo. The event will be dedicated to remembering, through images and words, the numerous cinematic, literary, and television episodes that connect the great Piedmontese writer, director, and journalist to the Susa Valley.
Through films, testimonies, and readings, Soldati's relationship with this region will be retraced, evoked in works such as "Piccolo Mondo Antico," "Fuga in Francia," the television reportage "Viaggio lungo la Valle del Po," and the stories "Storie di Spettri" and "I racconti del maresciallo." Anna Cardini Soldati, Mario Soldati's daughter-in-law and the driving force behind the association named after him, will speak. Antonita Fonzo and Andrea Galli will host the event. For those who wish, aperitifs are available starting at 7:00 PM.
SPECIAL EVENTS: SCREENINGS WITH DIRECTORS AND PERFORMERS
The 30th edition opens on Saturday, March 28th at the Cinema Comunale in Condove with a screening of "Nel blu dipinto di rosso" by Stefano Di Polito, a finalist for the 2026 Nastri d'Argento Documentari Awards in the "Music" special selection. The documentary tells the story of the Cantacronache through the firsthand accounts of Emilio Jona and Fausto Amodei. The director will be present, with the participation of the Giovanna Marini Popular Choir.

VALSUSA FILMFEST... A THIRTY-YEAR-LONG FILM
On Saturday, May 9th, at the Cinema Comunale in Condove (5:30 pm), the festival celebrates itself with "Valsusa Filmfest... a thirty-year-long film": a celebration of the productions that have told the stories, characters, and memories of the Susa Valley in the twentieth century.
It will also be an opportunity to pay tribute to Luigi Cantore's filmography—from "Profumo di resina" to "La partigiana Fasulin," from "L'acqua e la fabbrica" to "Sì sempre, Don Luigi Chiampo"—through the words of those who shared his experience on set. The director, cast, collaborators, and actor Mario Brusa will be present.
THE FILM COMPETITION
The historic heart of the festival, the VFF 2026 film competition is divided into six sections: Short Films, Deserting, Making Memory, Green Screen, The Alps, and Music Videos.
The selected works from the The Alps section will be screened on Friday, April 10th at the Cinema Comunale in Condove (9:00 PM). The following day, Saturday, April 11th, also at the Cinema Comunale in Condove (3:30 PM, followed by a screening of the film Shooting), will be the turn of the Deserting and Short Films sections. The Green Screen section will take place on Wednesday, April 15th at the Auditorium of the IISS Des Ambrois in Oulx (10:00 a.m.). The works from the Music Video section will be screened on Friday, May 8th, at the Spazio X in Almese (9:00 p.m.). The winning work from the Fare Memoria section will be presented, as per tradition, on April 25th at the Museo Diffuso della Resistenza in Turin and then again on May 6th at the Teatro Chiara Melesso in Caprie (Novaretto).
The Disertare section is a brand new feature this year: presented in collaboration with the Turin branch of the National Association of Civilian Victims of War, it welcomes works that spread a culture of peace and rejection of all wars, as well as of today's arms races. It is dedicated to Ugo Berga, partisan and man of peace.
The Green Screen section, now in its second year, is organized in collaboration with the IISS Des Ambrois in Oulx and invites young people to tell stories related to environmental sustainability. The jury will be composed of students, teachers, and external experts.
Among the members of the Short Films section jury is actress Sara D'Amario, who starred in the Rai 1 television series "Cuori."
THE VALSUSA LIBERFEST
The festival includes events from the Valsusa Liberfest, an initiative dedicated to literature and the spoken arts. On Friday, May 8th, the Salone Polivalente di San Giorio will host a narrative theater performance inspired by Flannery O'Connor's "The Geranium," starring Massimo Chianello, Antonietta Perretta, and Chiara Viffredo, directed by Marco Scoffone, with texts by Tiziana Angilletta.
Norberto Rosa High School in Bussoleno is participating in the "Reading" project: two meetings (March 17 and April 14) with writer and publisher Michele Vaccari, who will guide students through readings of "Io sono la bestia" by Andrea Donaera and "Ti prendo e ti porto via" by Niccolò Ammaniti.
PROPOSALS FOR SCHOOLS
On March 13, a meeting took place at the Cinema Comunale in Condove between middle school classes featuring Ahmed Baala, a political refugee from Yemen, and Nicolas Marzolino, a civilian victim of war: two different stories, united by war and the need to tell it.
From March to June, at the ITCG Galileo Galilei in Avigliana, students and teachers will work on a podcast series featuring episodes and characters from the history of the Resistance in the Susa Valley, based on the book "Il treno che va in Francia" by Roberto Gastaldo. This will include a workshop on radio communication led by Chiara Viffredo.
THE PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION
On Friday, May 1st, the Certosa 1515 in Avigliana will open at 4:00 PM. The photography exhibition "Shepherds and Flocks of Our Valleys – A World Next Door" by Giorgio Negro will showcase the phenomenon of sheep transhumance in the Susa Valley. The exhibition will remain open until May 10th and will then be revisited at various locations in the valley and the Metropolitan City.
The art exhibition "Chronicles of Water and Graphite" by Walter Borla will be open during all events at the Condove Municipal Cinema.
SOCIALITY IN FESTIVAL
The 4th edition of Sociality in Festival, a festival dedicated to social inclusion, will take place in October and December 2026. A preview screening of the documentary film "The Lighthouse – The Fantastic Journey of the Rulli Frulli Band" by Diego Gavioli and Gianluca Marcon will take place on Sunday, May 24th at the Cinema Comunale in Condove (4:30 pm), preceded by a live performance by the Rulli Frulli Marching Band.
