Itinerary 4 - Montebenedetto and Susa
The visit to the ancient Charterhouse of Montebenedetto, immersed in the silence and peace of a clearing in the mountains of Villar Focchiardo, at an altitude of one thousand meters, is a true discovery.
The monks of Saint Bruno arrived at this place at the dawn of the 1200s, after a very brief stay at La Losa in Gravere, and remained there until the end of the 15th century, when it was abandoned due to a flooding event.
Even today, the Charterhouse maintains the charm of a small medieval monastery, with the church's essential structure and the remains of the Carthusian monks' houses.
The discovery of the history and art of Susa takes place through a pleasant walk in the city streets, where it is possible to admire Celtic, Roman, and medieval monuments and the rich cultural heritage of this city, called the “gateway to Italy” for its importance as an international transit point.
