EXTINCTION – When life disappears What if, at some point, humans had risked disappearing from the face of the planet? Extinction is one of the great fears of our species. A relatively recent concept, entering scientific thought starting from the nineteenth century, yet capable of evoking a terrifying scenario: that something could happen, on such a vast scale, as to erase life from Earth. And yet, in the geological history of our planet, it has already happened. At least five times. On Sunday, November 8, at the Planetarium of Chiusa di San Michele, we will take you on Extinction – When Life Disappears, a journey through the so-called Big Five, the five major mass extinctions that have marked the history of life. From the catastrophes of the past, we will arrive at the present to reflect on the disappearance of animal and plant species and on the link between these phenomena and the profound changes that humans are imposing on the planet.
