Via Cesare Battisti, 10050 Condove

The ancient parish church, dedicated to St. Mary of the Meadow, then to St. Peter, and finally to St. Roch, with the adjoining old cemetery, was probably built around the 12th century based on the oldest masonry structures of the nave and the bell tower, which have clear Romanesque architectural forms.
The first written records of its history date back to 1290, the year in which the Charterhouse of Montebenedetto authorized the transport of timber "pro ecclesia de Condovis reficienda" (for the church of Condove to be rebuilt). The church has undergone various alterations over the centuries, due to numerous reasons, including frequent floods from the nearby Rio della Rossa; a raised section of the church is clearly visible while the bell tower's first floor is completely underground. Additionally, the religious building has been "reversed" by demolishing the original apse, sealing off the triumphal arch, and creating the entrance door. To the west, where the facade and entrance originally were, a new polygonal apse and two side chapels delimiting a non-existent transept have been built. During restoration work, a piece of fine craftsmanship, in bronze and enamel depicting the Crucifixion, was found during the excavation phase of the old apse, which is now housed in the Diocesan Museum of Susa. Furthermore, the surveys brought to light a part of a fresco on the triumphal arch, considered by experts to be perhaps the oldest existing in the valley. Originally belonging to the Church of St. Mary of the Meadow is a fine painting from the 17th century depicting Our Lady of Suffrage, now kept in the parish church of St. Peter in Chains.

In recent years, the Romanesque Church of St. Roch has become a reference point for the cultural life of the village, thanks to the association Friends of St. Roch Church, which periodically organizes visits, art exhibitions, and concerts.
