Via Conte Verde, 10055 Condove
The remains of a castle are located on a hill dominating the entrance of the valley between Mount Pirchiriano and Caprasio, a short distance from the Dora Riparia and the Sessi stream, between Caprie and Condove. The oldest records not of the building itself but of a local defensive system seem to be linked to the clash between Charlemagne, king of the Franks, and Desiderius, king of the Lombards, which took place between 771 and 774 at the Chiuse: it is likely that the hill of the castellazzo was also equipped with defensive structures that were part of the so-called "clusae langobardorum", on the extent of which scholars do not always agree.
In fact, it is only starting from the 13th century that the Caprie castle (Castrum Capriarum) is explicitly mentioned in a notarial certificate concerning the territories where the counts of Savoy exercised baronial rights. During that period, it was the center of one of the abbey castellanies of San Giusto di Susa and was also the seat of a court and prison. For this reason, it normally hosted a small number of soldiers.
