Buttigliera Alta
The animals carved in stone and depicted in the frescoes of the Preceptory of Sant'Antonio di Ranverso are the "silent residents" featured in "Between Stone and Fresco: A Traveling Narration in the Preceptory Bestiary," scheduled for Saturday, September 12th, at 3:30 PM.
The tour offers a reading of the Preceptory's figurative heritage through the numerous animal presences that inhabit its spaces: from real subjects to fantastical creatures. In the Middle Ages, animals carried symbolic meanings and could represent virtues and vices, fears, warnings, or promises of salvation.
The tour will lead participants through stone and frescoes to learn to recognize and interpret these images, reconstructing the meaning they assumed within medieval culture. It's a different way to observe the Preceptory, focusing on details that become the key to understanding the imagery and symbolism of the era.
