Once synonymous with celebration and sharing, the famous Susa Valley biscuit is once again the star of the show in the municipality of Vaie. There was a time when, in the Susa Valley, the word celebration had a specific meaning: that of lemon zest and melted butter on a hot cast iron. The Canestrello, a golden delight with a distinctive lattice pattern, was not just a simple dessert, but a collective ritual. Since few owned the precious baking tray, it was lent from house to house, creating an unbreakable bond between neighbors. They were prepared only for special occasions, such as San Pancrazio, and were jealously guarded in tins to ensure they last as long as possible. Today, that magic lives on with the 28th Canestrello Festival, an event that transforms Vaie into a showcase of excellence for the entire Susa Valley.
The 2026 edition of the festival is not just a moment of celebration, but a fundamental element of a tourism and cultural promotion strategy. The initiative is supported by the Metropolitan City of Turin, as part of the call for proposals for municipalities with fewer than 10,000 inhabitants. This institutional support aims to support projects like Vaie's that leverage historical roots to transform them into opportunities for development and identity for the area.
The highlight of the festival takes place on Sunday, May 10th, with the market exhibition of typical products, the "Vaiedipingi" painting competition, and visits to the Prehistory Laboratory Museum. The festival will feature numerous workshops and competitions, as well as cultural events such as art exhibitions, concerts by the Vaiese Philharmonic, and historical reenactments.
