On Saturday, August 22nd, Susa Svelata returns, a series of stories and shadows under the moonlight. The event is titled "People Coming, People Going," and it explores one of the characteristics that have most profoundly shaped the city's history: its long history as a place of passage.
Susa was founded at the point where the valley divides toward the two great passes of Montgenèvre and Mont Cenis. This strategic position, since Roman times, has made it an almost obligatory passage for those wishing to cross the Alps and continue toward Gaul.
The palace from which Adelaide Castle would arise in later centuries was also closely linked to this function. It most likely served as an imperial postal station and a roadside checkpoint: a place where people, goods, news, and power constantly passed through.
As the centuries passed, travelers changed, but not the role of the city. In the Middle Ages, Susa equipped itself to welcome merchants and pilgrims heading beyond the Alps, becoming a place of rest, meeting, and exchange. Later, in the modern age, the courts traveling to France would also pass through its gates, along with their retinues, carriages, and everything else that accompanied the travels of the great figures of the time.
People who come, people who go build their stories precisely around this constant movement: those who arrived in Susa, those who stayed for just one night, those who departed for the other side of the Alps, and those who, instead, stayed long enough to leave a trace of their presence in the city.
An evening to explore Susa from a different perspective, following the stories of those who passed through and discovering how its geographical position has contributed, over the centuries, to determining its role, form, and identity.
