With the echoes of previous concerts still alive, the Vita e Pace Cultural Center is preparing to host a new musical event dedicated to the great Catalan cellist Pablo Casals. The concert will be held on Sunday, May 31st at 4:30 PM in the church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Borgo Vecchio, Avigliana.
Better known as Pau Casals, a name chosen by the artist himself for its profound meaning, as in Catalan "Pau" means "Peace," Casals remains an essential point of reference for generations of cellists, an ideal Maestro and an artistic and human model.
His greatness is linked not only to his musical and technical excellence, but also to his extraordinary civic commitment. With the advent of the Franco dictatorship, he chose voluntary exile in a small French village in the Pyrenees, which over time has become an international center
of reference for music, art, and culture.
In 1971, at the age of ninety-five, he received the United Nations Peace Medal for "having dedicated his life to truth, beauty, and peace." His appeal against the inhumanity of war and in favor of peace, sadly, remains profoundly relevant today.
Paying tribute to him will be an ensemble of cellists trained at the Turin Conservatory under the guidance of Maestro Marco Ferrari. The program will feature pieces from Casals's repertoire, transcribed and arranged for cello ensemble, alongside original compositions by the musician himself and works specifically dedicated to him.
