From October 5 to 12, the 13th edition of the Planet Earth Week will take place, a national event promoting geosciences. The Metropolitan City of Turin, together with Arpa Piemonte, is organizing a geo-event titled “From the Tethys to the Alps through the Colle del Lys,” scheduled for Sunday, October 5, with a postponement to the 12th in case of bad weather.

The Colle del Lys, at an altitude of 1,314 meters, connects the Lower Susa Valley with the Viù Valley and is also known as a place of remembrance of the Resistance. Since 2004, the area has been a Natural Park, managed by the Metropolitan City of Turin, due to its landscape and environmental value. But above all, the pass is an important geosite: it lies along a tectonic boundary that separates the Earth’s mantle from the rocks of the ancient Tethys ocean floor. Here, mantle rocks still preserve their original features, while the slopes are covered with extensive debris, creating a landscape unique in the Alps.

The excursion, led by geologists from the Metropolitan City and Arpa Piemonte, will retrace more than 200 million years of history: from the opening of the Ligurian-Piedmont Ocean to the continental collision that gave rise to the Alps, from past climate changes to those currently underway.

The route is 9 kilometers long with an elevation gain of 150 meters and is classified as easy. Hiking clothes and shoes are required, as well as a packed lunch, while fountains and refreshment points are available at the Colle.

Participation is free with mandatory registration by October 3: https://www.arpa.piemonte.it/evento/arpa-partecipa-alla-xiii-edizione-della-settimana-pianeta-terra.
