The Vita e Pace Cultural Center continues its event series with a program dedicated to one of the most significant figures in 20th-century Italian literature and testimony.
On Sunday, September 27, at 4:30 PM, the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Avigliana will host a theatrical and musical performance directed and performed by Rosanna Galleggiante and Mauro Cavagliato, dedicated to Primo Levi—chemist, writer, and witness to the Shoah.
Symbolically set in Avigliana—specifically at the site of the former dynamite plant that was converted into a paint factory—the performance traces key moments in Levi’s life: his deportation and experience at Auschwitz, his return home, his years working as a chemist, and the gradual emergence of writing as a means of bearing witness and reflecting on the world.
The performance highlights Levi’s extraordinary ability to foster a dialogue between science and literature, rigor and imagination. Alongside passages drawn from his personal experiences, the show incorporates his science fiction stories, his focus on the world of work, and the curiosity about reality that permeates his entire body of work.
Through narration, readings, poetry, music, and song, the performance weaves a multifaceted narrative in which the dramatic weight of memory intertwines with poetry, irony, and a sense of wonder.
The script includes adaptations and abridgments of Primo Levi’s works, alongside original writing created specifically for the show.
The event aims to present the audience with a complex, unconventional portrait of Levi: not merely a witness to the Holocaust, but also a scientist, a writer, and a man deeply curious about the world—someone capable of transforming his experiences into knowledge and literature.
An opportunity to hear Levi’s words and to rediscover, through theater and music, the power of his work and his unwavering commitment to human dignity. Starting September 27, alongside the scheduled musical events at Santa Maria, visitors can also immerse themselves in the world of art through the exhibition "Oltre il ritratto" (Beyond the Portrait), showcasing the works of artist Daniela Bruno.
