The roar of the deer is a powerful and deep guttural call emitted by males during the mating season (September–October) to attract females and deter rival males. This sound, which can be heard from kilometers away as it echoes through the valleys, is a sign of strength and vitality. Its intensity is proportional to the size of the male and his reproductive success. If the roar is not enough to intimidate his opponents, the male may engage in battle, challenging the rival in physical combat to defend his harem of females.
