Piazza Martiri della Libertà, 1, 10050 Salbertrand
A town already mentioned in diplomas and documents from the 11th century, it developed thanks to the crossing of the Ancient Road of France, around which, among houses of significant architecture and monumental fountains, there is also a hotel for travelers, the Hotel Dieu. The parish church of Saint John the Baptist in the main square is one of the most important sacred buildings in the upper valley with a portico and a stone portal created by the stonemason Matteo Rude from Melezet. The interior is richly decorated with frescoes dating from the 14th century to the 16th century, and a retable by Jean Faure from Thures. Salbertrand mountain features a wooded slope rich in fir trees that are the heart of the Gran Bosco di Salbertrand Natural Park, which extends on the north-facing slope of the Upper Susa Valley, also including the Valsusa municipalities of Chiomonte, Exilles, Salbertrand, Oulx and Sauze d'Oulx for over 3,700 hectares, from 1000 meters above sea level to 2600 meters at the water divide with the peaks of Mounts Genevris (2,500 m), Blegier (2,550 m), Gran Costa (2,600 m) and Gran Serin (2,589 m). Within the park, the Colombano Romean Ecomuseum collects the memories of land and water of the community through a circular route that includes: the hydraulic mill, which tells eight hundred years of water exploitation, from feudal milling rights to electricity production; in the same building, the school of the past and an ethnographic setup; the common oven of the Oulme hamlet; the ancient charcoal kiln and the lime furnace; the 19th-century icehouse with the adjoining supply pond; the smoke-sauna built thanks to a European project conducted by the Polytechnic University of Turin; the site dedicated to the Glorious Return of the Waldensians. Among the notable events are the Feast of St. John the Baptist in June and the Trial of the Carnival on Shrove Tuesday.
