The project, funded by the Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo, has the Diocesan Cultural Center of Susa as the lead agency and the Union of Mountain Valleys Susa, the Union of Mountain Alta Valle Susa, the Union of Mountain Olympic Municipalities Via Lattea, the European Association of the Via Francigena, Piedmont Europe Theater Foundation, Turin and Province Tourism, and the Itineraries in Music Association as partners.
The project “The Via Francigena in the Susa Valley: voices and places for experiential tourism” is among the 21 winners of the “In Light. Enhancing and telling the cultural identities of the territories” call, promoted by the Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo with one objective: the cultural and creative enhancement of the territories to make them more accessible and attractive to both residents and tourists, in a perspective of sustainable social and economic development.
The project is based on the new integrated territorial pact signed in July 2021: Destination Tourist Agreement Susa Valley.
The Agreement, signed between the Diocesan Cultural Center, as the technical secretariat of the Territorial Enhancement Plan Susa Valley Treasures, and the three Unions of the Valley Municipalities, aims to synergistically support actions of cultural enhancement, promotion, and socio-economic tourism development of the territory and local communities within the general framework of regional and national policy initiatives. It also intends to position itself as a unique territory in cultural enhancement and tourism promotion in both national and international markets.
The multi-year project, whose first phase will develop over 2022, involves the development of the territory and its attractiveness starting from the Via Francigena and some "lighthouse assets" present along its route: the Gorge of San Gervasio between Cesana and Claviere, the Fort of Exilles, and the Adelaide Castle of Susa with the historic center.
The proposal, which won the first phase of the call, includes specific enhancement actions, both in terms of hiking and naturalistic aspects, and in terms of historical and cultural aspects and city animation, such as theatrical activities and themed visits with the help of innovative and immersive equipment.
In addition to the activities identified on the "lighthouse assets", the project includes concerts and events throughout the valley territory for the summer season; the creation of "Good Morning to the Guest", a new integrated communication tool available to operators for guests staying in the Valley; the first edition of the Valsusa Slow Fest (dedicated to slow and proximity tourism, which will involve various even transalpine partners); the development of a tourism destination brand; specific training for hospitality operators; the creation of urban furniture prototypes, in collaboration with the Polytechnic University of Turin, intended for the Valley's cycle path; an educational press trip to introduce journalists and sector influencers to the territory.
All these project actions, coordinated and developed in a multi-year plan, aim to build a territory that is increasingly cohesive and aware of its cultural and tourist identity, which identifies itself along the Via Francigena as a Unique Tourist Destination: the Susa Valley.
To achieve the goal of Unique Tourist Destination - Susa Valley, 6 specific actions are planned:
Action 1. Creation of a Valle Susa tourism Teamwork for integrated communication
To develop a communication strategy aimed at promoting the knowledge and enjoyment of the historical, environmental and sporting heritage of the Valley, facilitating the construction of the relationship between tourists and the tourist offers present in the area, giving participants the opportunity to know the peculiarities of the entire territory, historical environments, and protected natural areas, starting from the opportunities offered by the Via Francigena and the initiatives of the project.
Action 2. Training and animation of cultural and tourist stakeholders of the territory for the creation of a logo and coordinated image for the integrated tourism destination brand of the Susa Valley.
Action 3. Events in the identified assets among culture and spiritual wellness
Organization of events along the valley's Via Francigena and at the Gorge of San Gervasio (between Cesana Torinese and Claviere), the Forte di Exilles, and the Castello di Susa with the goal of giving visibility to the project both to local populations and externally. The action includes artistic installations, widespread theater, spiritual wellness, and concerts that are capable of enhancing local associations and the identified landscape values linked to the Via Francigena and creating forms of dialogue between these and contemporary artistic languages. These initiatives foresee the participation of qualified artists with the technical support of the Fondazione Teatro Piemonte Europa and the Associazione Itinerari in musica.
Action 4. Mobile workshop and urban furniture prototype along the Ciclovia Francigena
Summer School activities in collaboration with the Politecnico di Torino and the Associazione Atelier Mobile together with local artisans aimed at creating an urban furniture installation useful to the users of the Ciclovia Francigena under construction.
Action 5. Organization of the first edition of Valsusa Slow Fest
A widespread Festival of slow travel and outdoor experiences, among traveling events and excursions in the alpine territories of the Via Francigena of Susa Valley, for the promotion of cultural heritage.
Action 6. Press Trip Educational
Organizing educational press trips to allow journalists and tourism operators to discover the rich heritage of the Valley through direct experience and contact with local partners and actors.
