On Sunday, September 6, the "Ali delle Alpi" association is organizing an event at the Palazzo delle Feste in Bardonecchia to mark International Vulture Awareness Day 2026.
The initiative, sponsored by the Metropolitan City of Turin, will offer nature enthusiasts the opportunity to discover the curiosities, lives, and conservation threats of the largest birds encountered while hiking in the valleys of the Western Alps.
At 9:00 a.m., the day will begin with an in-depth meeting on vulture observations in 2026 and their presence in the Susa Valley. Guided tours of the exhibition at the Palazzo delle Feste will be organized from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. There will also be a children's area with games, drawings, and readings, and a treasure hunt will be held at 4:00 p.m. A guided hike to the "Val Fredda" special conservation area in Bardonecchia is also planned for Saturday, September 5th, accompanied by Laura Antiquario, a guide from the Cottian Alps Protected Areas Management Agency. The fee is €25 for adults and €20 for children aged 6 to 12. The meeting point is at 11:00 a.m. in Rochemolles, with the return scheduled for 4:00 p.m. For information, please visit www.silvestristrekking.it or call +39 347 6000348.
International Vulture Awareness Day was established in 2006 thanks to the collaboration of nature conservation organizations around the world. Originally promoted by the Birds of Prey Program of the Endangered Wildlife Trust in South Africa and the Hawk Conservancy Trust in England, the initiative has transcended borders, becoming a beacon of hope for vulture conservation. Today, it is promoted internationally by the Endangered Wildlife Trust, the Hawk Conservancy Trust, and the Vulture Conservation Foundation, on behalf of the Vulture Specialist Group. Hundreds of organizers and thousands of participants have joined IVAD over the years to join forces and demand concrete action for vulture conservation.
