Presentation of an art-historical guide to Avigliana

Oct. 16, 2026 - Oct. 16, 2026

Avigliana

On Friday, October 16, at 6:00 PM, the historical-artistic guide to the city of Avigliana—authored by Dario Vota, Daniela Cereia, and Fabrizio Fantino, and published by Il Graffio di Borgone—will be presented in the Avigliana Town Hall council chamber.

This is the ninth guide in the "Terra di confine" (Borderland) project—"Journeys through history and art in the Susa Valleys"—conceived and curated ten years ago by Piero Del Vecchio and Dario Vota. The project aims to share the latest findings from scholarly research on the archaeology, history, art, and architecture of the Susa Valleys—and specifically the area's "landmark sites"—with the general public through concise, accessible texts. To date, the project has produced three volumes on the history of the Susa Valleys and nine compact guides.

Joining the officials and authors at the presentation will be Giuseppe Sergi, Professor Emeritus of Medieval History at the University of Turin.

Situated at the mouth of the Susa Valley—in a moraine basin between Mount Pirchirino and the Rivoli hills, traversed by the Dora River and defined by its lakes—the Avigliana area has certainly attracted human settlement since the retreat of the Susa Valley glacier, which ended approximately 11,000 to 12,000 years ago. Medieval documents depict Avigliana as a place of strategic and political importance, home to a toll collection station and a mint. Its parishes and newly founded districts bear witness to a rapidly developing city that was expanding and growing its population, drawn by numerous profitable activities; it is a place rich in artistic and historical heritage.
