Around the 1960s, the expansion of the city of Avigliana towards the modern part caused the abandonment of the Medieval Village and thus its ancient church of Santa Maria Maggiore, where now only once a year, on the occasion of the Madonna del Carmine festival, is Mass celebrated. Over the years, the church suffered numerous thefts that gradually stripped it of all sacred furnishings, and like any disused building, it deteriorated rapidly. Thanks to the loving care of the parish priest Don Roberto Balbiano, the villagers, and some volunteer associations, some structural interventions were made possible, preventing its complete deterioration. In '99, the need arose to find a suitable space for the Veglio Turino sculptural collection, which had already been housed at the Madonna dei Laghi sanctuary in Avigliana, and attention turned to the ancient church of Santa Maria, in need of significant restorations. Thus, the collection found its ideal home, and the church began to come back to life. At this point, the idea emerged of creating a cultural center to share these precious and evocative spaces, rich in beauty and history, with cultural and social proposals capable of favoring the Village's revival and contributing to the total recovery of the monument. Thus, in May '99, the cultural center "Vita e Pace" was born, which, thanks to an agreement with the parish priest, could establish its headquarters in Santa Maria Maggiore. The presence of the Veglio Turino collection favored the allocation of a regional contribution from the Department of Culture, aimed at the recovery and enhancement of the former cemetery area, with the creation of an outdoor garden-museum that, in addition to housing some bronzes by the artist, can now host temporary exhibitions by other sculptors and be a meeting place for shows and moments of socialization. Its internal and external spaces are thus available to scholars and artists, exhibitions and concerts, theatrical performances, cultural initiatives in general, moments of reflection and confrontation, and spiritual exercises. It also collaborates with the University of Turin by offering internships to students from the degree courses related to the Faculty of Education Sciences.
The Vita e Pace cultural center aims to make available to the public the native culture of the Avigliana area and its surroundings, nurturing it with artifacts, studies, and works sourced from the territory itself and its people, delving into the various historical, naturalistic, and religious aspects of such culture. The "Vita e Pace" cultural center intends to be a reference point for all those who care about their past and future. Thus, art becomes an opportunity for socialization and aggregation. The center collaborates with a group of associations from the Susa Valley on a project promoted by the Piedmont Region, called "Valle di Susa. Treasures of Alpine Art and Culture," which aims to enhance the valley area.
