Via della Torre, 11, 10050 Sauze d'Oulx
Sauze d'Oulx is surrounded by the peaks of Mount Triplex, Bourget, and Genevris and developed upstream of Oulx, from which it was for a long time a hamlet until gaining its autonomy, including a parish, in the 16th century. Today it is a renowned tourist destination, particularly for winter sports, thanks to the presence of the vast ski area of the Via Lattea, which connects the major ski resorts of the Upper Susa Valley. Initially a predominantly agricultural and artisanal village, with the birth of winter tourism in the early 1900s, Sauze d'Oulx became a reference point for hotel and holiday services, where the structural needs of tourism development intertwined with the great names of architects who contributed to the design of mountain spaces. Among these, the Torre della Colonia Fiat (1939), designed by architect Bonadè Bottino, stands out, characterized by an internal spiral ramp that follows the structure to the top, where a skylight brings natural light to the building. Among the oldest buildings is the parish church of San Giovanni Battista (1534) in the heart of the historic village: the bell tower stands out in the typical Romanesque-Dauphiné style of the Upper Susa Valley, while inside the church houses high-quality liturgical furnishings, such as the retable of the main altar, the work of master carver Chaffrey Faure of Thures (1703). Among the most significant hamlets for the preservation of traditional architecture is the hamlet of Jouvenceaux. Here stands the chapel of Sant'Antonio Abate with a remarkable cycle of 15th-century frescoes that adorn both the interior and exterior of the chapel. Famous is the Last Judgment on the facade and the south side, the imposing St. Christopher with some panels depicting the Annunciation and St. Michael the Archangel, while inside there are fragments of the history of St. Anthony and a Crucifixion. The pictorial cycle is attributed to the Pinerolese workshop of the Serra, very active in the Susa Valley. Throughout the year, there are many sports events related both to skiing and mountain biking, as well as typical products such as the Montagna potato (DECO product) and the Gofres, typical stuffed waffles cooked on special griddles (August).
