In the Susa Valley, popular traditions preserve pagan rites assimilated by Christianity. Devotion to Saint John the Baptist is widespread, deriving from the ancient cult linked to the summer solstice. On the eve of Saint John in Sauze d'Oulx and Salbertrand bonfires are lit to celebrate, reminiscent of the Celtic rites for the Sun god during the solstice. Before the following dawn, they bathe their eyes with dew, make bouquets of flowers for protection and pass the cattle over the ashes of the fires to protect them from diseases. The celebrations of San Giovanni illuminated the Valley with fires and purifying rituals.
