The Artist
GABRIEL GIRARDI (Almese 1938 - 2025)
Gabriel Girardi was born on September 22, 1938, in Almese, in the Susa Valley, where he began painting at a young age under the guidance of his father Nardo, a member of the Decalage group.
After graduating from the Liceo Artistico Statale in Turin, he attended the studio of the painter Gregorio Calvi di Bergolo for several years, also studying the classics of modern European painting and the masters of the Italian Renaissance.
At the Accademia Albertina in Turin, where he continued his studies, he also attended the classes of the sculptor Umberto Baglioni and the painter Francesco Menzio.
In the 1960s, he opened a studio in Turin and was appointed professor of painting, first at the Liceo Artistico in Savona and then in Turin, where he remained until 1994.
In 1964, he made his debut with a solo exhibition at the Palazzo degli Stati Generali in Aosta. Since then, his extensive exhibition activity, documented by numerous participations in important group exhibitions and numerous solo shows in Italy and abroad, has garnered the appreciation and unanimous recognition of critics for the originality of his "evocative and dreamy" pictorial expression.
Since the 1980s, he has increasingly appeared at European cultural institutions, and has participated by invitation at the International Contemporary Art Fairs in Bari, Turin, Montreal, Bad Gastein, Stockholm, and New York.
Over the course of his long artistic career, he has received prestigious awards, and a significant number of his works are permanently exhibited at the Montecatini Academy of Art, the Palazzo della Regione in Aosta, the Chemical Institute of the University of Turin, the Free Lund Collection in New Jersey, the Juan Truzzoli Foundation in La Plata, the Municipal Casino in Sanremo, the Garda Museum in Ivrea, the Princess Alexandra of Kent Collection in Kensington, the Association of Viticulturists in Morgex, the Pinacoteca Civica in Moncalieri, and the Civic Palaces of Turin, Susa, Saint Vincent, and Milan.
Combining his personal pictorial research with an interest in sacred themes, he has created numerous works for churches and religious institutions in Piedmont, the Aosta Valley, and Corsica.
He has collaborated with the graphic art publishers Alvise Salomon and DS in Turin.
His professional profile has been widely promoted in official catalogs, yearbooks, exhibitions, and monographs dedicated to contemporary Italian painting, such as Borsa d’Arte, Gente Nostra, Comanducci, La Pittura Europea Contemporanea, Bolaffi, Archivio Storico degli Artisti Contemporanei, Linea Figurativa, l’Arte Italiana per il Mondo, and Annuario d’Arte Moderna 1999.
The Exhibition
"Beyond the Gaze": The Language of Silence in the Art of Gabriel Girardi
The retrospective exhibition "Beyond the Gaze" opens to the public, dedicated to Gabriel Girardi (Almese, 1938), a leading figure who trained at the Accademia Albertina under the guidance of masters such as Francesco Menzio and Umberto Baglioni. The exhibition celebrates the creative trajectory of an artist who successfully blended the rigor of the tradition of the great masters of the past with contemporary research focused on the essential. The exhibition focuses on sacred art, a field in which Girardi has conducted profound compositional research since the early 1960s. In these works, the artist transforms color into a tool for spiritual inquiry. Through a masterful use of light and texture, the artist invites the viewer into contemplative silence, transforming the moment of vision into an act of prayer or existential reflection. The exhibition then emphasizes the artist's stylistic maturity, characterized by an extreme synthesis in which the figures, initially fragmented by subtle gradations, are recomposed into chiaroscuro symphonies of extraordinary elegance. Through a skillful use of "non-color" and unpredictable glazes, Girardi liberates the viewer's imagination, inviting them to an experience of introspection and pure contemplation. Painting frees itself from formal weight to become pure visual music, capable of transforming the sense of space and creative fruition.
"Girardi's creative act transforms into music, the music of silence that reaches human consciousness through feelings and imagination."
