Brief description:
The figure of the Christ of Sorrow is depicted on the southern wall of the presbytery of the abbey church of St. Anthony of Ranverso. Placed below an arcosolium, the figure is positioned in the center of the lower portion of the wall, which, in its upper part, hosts the depiction of the stories of the life of St. Anthony the Abbot. The dead Christ, portrayed in the act of emerging from the tomb, has a gaunt body marked by torment.
Around Christ's tomb are depicted the instruments of the Passion. The devotional image may have been accompanied by an inscribed prayer or intended as a funerary image for a parietal tomb.
Historical-critical notes:
Giacomo Jaquerio, considered among the major exponents of the international Gothic in Piedmont, was a Turin painter in the service of the Acaja court and subsequently of Amadeus VIII; he is documented between 1403 and 1453, the year of his death. In Ranverso, in addition to the famous frescoes of the presbytery, he executed the large fresco cycle of the ascent to Calvary depicted in the sacristy.
