Located at the end of the left nave of the Cathedral of San Giusto, the canvas, dated 1723, presents in the upper part the Addolorata portrayed in the act of contemplating the cloth of the Shroud, supported by two putti; other angels surround the Virgin and contemplate the scene. In the lower part of the painting, Saint Peter (on the left, portrayed in the act of pointing to the Shroud) and Saint Stephen (on the right, in a praying attitude), portrayed in front of a marble balustrade beyond which a landscape can be seen, contemplate the sacred cloth.
Historical-artistic notes:
The painting, probably commissioned by the canon Pietro Ludovico Lauteri in 1723, is mentioned among the furnishings of the Cathedral starting from 1751. It is in good condition and has an elaborate frame in gilded and carved wood.
