Frazione San Giuliano - Via Montello, 10059 Susa

Author: Buffa
Object: Painting
Subject: Madonna with Saints Peter and Andrew
Chronology: 1751
Matter and technique: Fresco
Location: San Giuliano di Susa - Private house

Brief description:
The scene depicts a Virgin Assumed into Heaven, on a mantle of white clouds, surrounded by angels and cherubs holding the Shroud of Turin. On the lower tier, Saints Peter and Andrew venerate the sacred linen in an act of prayer and devotion.

Historical-critical notes:
The fresco is on the outside wall of a private home, located inside a small shrine. It is signed and dated (Buffa, 1751). It is rather unusual for its format: vertical rather than horizontal.
The Virgin, with her heart pierced by a sword, cannot hold the sheet, this role is entrusted to the little angels who are around her. The saints, however, placed on another tier of the painting, do not help in the display of the shroud but simply venerate it from below.
