Vicolo Vescovado, 10050 Chiomonte
The Chapel of Saint Catherine stands near the current Beraud Palace, built in the area once occupied by the structures of the Domus Hospitalis of the Knights of Saint John, intended to welcome pilgrims and travelers passing through the Montgenèvre Pass, dependent on the great Priory of Saint-Gilles in Provence.
The construction of the shrine is attributed to these latter, designed as an oratorium for the hospital house and originally dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, patron of the Hospitallers. The work's realization dates back to the years immediately following 1208.
Recently restored in both its Romanesque architecture and its splendid fourteenth-century frescoes.
On the vault of the presbytery, the figures of the Apostles are arranged in twelve large panels. Each carries the attribute of their martyrdom and a scroll with a verse from the Creed written on it.
