Frazione Ramats, 10050 Chiomonte
The chapel, located in a panoramic area adjacent to vineyards at the entrance to the Ramats district of Chiomonte, was built between the 14th and 15th centuries and expanded to its current size between the 16th and 17th centuries.
The interior is decorated with scenes from the life of Saint Andrew the Apostle, executed in the late 15th century by the so-called Master of Coignet and Ramats, associated with the Serra workshop of Pinerolo and active not only in Ramats but also at the Coignet chapel and the parish church of Rochemolles in Bardonecchia.
The holy arch, once located outside the chapel and now a division point between the presbytery and the prayer hall, is adorned with a splendid Annunciation, likened by critics to the one in the parish church of Rochemolles.
The presbytery area is instead decorated with scenes from the life and martyrdom of Saint Andrew, divided into thirteen intensely dramatic panels.
Particularly noteworthy are the grotesque faces of the saint's executioners, while stylistically prominent are the vibrant use of colors and the incorporation of contemporary fashion elements in the clothing of the various depicted characters.
Critics have also highlighted links in these frescoes not only with other buildings in the upper Susa Valley mentioned earlier but also with the depiction of the Evangelists inside the Church of the Cordeliers (Franciscans) in Briançon.
