There's a place where time seems to have stood still, a custodian of stories, crafts, and traditions rooted in the heart of the Alta Val di Susa. That place is the picturesque hamlet of Melezet, in Bardonecchia, which on Saturday, July 18th, will be decked out in celebration to host the eagerly awaited Festa dello Scapolaire.
A busy day, sponsored by the Municipality of Bardonecchia and the Metropolitan City of Turin, designed to bring residents and tourists back to life with authentic Alpine culture through a rich program of events that will enliven the hamlet from morning until evening.
A journey through ancient crafts and the flavors of the land
Starting at 9:00 a.m., the streets of Melezet will light up with the colorful farmers' and artisans' market, a unique opportunity to discover and purchase the valleys' typical products. Wandering among the stalls, you'll encounter the age-old art of stonecutters and master carvers ("Chisels and Traditions") or admire the fascinating display of "Rudun," the characteristic cowbells used for pastures.
The scent of fresh bread will then guide visitors to one of the morning's highlights: the collective bread-making ritual (reservations required at the Bardonecchia Tourist Office), led by master baker Andrea Perino, a unique opportunity to understand and learn about the bread-making process.
The morning will culminate with the celebration of Holy Mass at the Parish of Sant'Antonio Abate at 11:00 a.m., featuring the Bardonecchia Historical Group in traditional dress.
Culture, old-time games, and itinerant music
The afternoon (starting at 2:30 p.m.) will be a blend of culture and entertainment.
Local history buffs will be delighted by the exhibition dedicated to the traditional costumes of the Alta Val di Susa at the Assomont headquarters, "The Charm of Traditions," and the exhibition "Art in Precious Metals" at the Museum of Alpine Religious Art.
For those who wish to rediscover the linguistic roots of the area, don't miss "The Patois Corner," hosted by Flavio Fenoglio and his "Professoresses": this year's theme is "School."
Fun will flourish with ancient games for adults and children and the inevitable, lively bocce tournament. The event will be accompanied by the rousing, traditional folk music of Parenaperde, followed by a concert by Coroulx at 3:30 PM.
Space for stories and food
From 10:30 a.m., "Il Salotto di Silvia" will open, an intimate meeting space where local producers and artisans will share firsthand the passion behind their work.
And for a sweet end? There will be a snack of gofre, the typical Alpine wafers, and, from 6:00 p.m., a wonderful wine tasting of wines produced by Azienda Agricola Martina di Giaglione (reservations required).
