Exhibition by Rinaldi in Chiomonte

The exhibition "Cime di alberi e gambe di tavolo" by the artist Jacopo Rinaldi opens on Saturday 14 June from 3pm to 7pm at the Pinacoteca "G.A. Levis" (via Vittorio Emanuele 75) in Chiomonte. The exhibition is the result of a period of residency, part of the program launched by Pinacoteca G.A. Levis aimed at hosting contemporary artists with the aim of activating new narratives starting from the substantial heritage of paintings by the landscape artist Giuseppe Augusto Levis and increasing public collections.

The artist residency program to which Rinaldi was invited involved numerous organizations that take care of the ethnographic museums of the Val di Susa (often set up in former school buildings), the Alpi Cozie Park that preserves the immaterial memory of the valley's arboreal rites, and the Carving Schools of Bussoleno and Chiomonte, to delve deeper into the formal and symbolic resonances that run through the craftsmanship and material culture of the area.

Treetops and Table Legs was born from an interest in the arboreal rites of the Val di Susa, in particular the ancient May festivals, during which with the arrival of spring a tree was removed from the woods and transported to the city center. Over time, these celebrations have become intertwined with religious festivals, as happens in Chiomonte on the day of the patron saint San Sebastiano, when the tip of a conifer (now a metal tip) carried in procession takes the shape of a dancing spindle – the Pouento (the tip). This movement, which spans the centuries, is not only a ritual gesture, but represents a transformation: from the tree to the saint, from the forest to the community, from the quiet to the cyclical nature of the rite.
