From Friday, May 29th to Sunday, May 31st, the Susa-Moncenisio returns, the world's oldest car race, counting towards the Coppa Italia Slalom di Prima Zona and sponsored by the Metropolitan City of Turin. Held since 1902, the Susa-Moncenisio has written memorable pages in the history of Italian motorsport. The Susa-Moncenisio is preparing to write a new chapter in its history. The 2026 edition marks the return of hillclimbs alongside the historic Slalom, thus returning the event to its most authentic roots. Following the completion of course checks and the official opening of registrations, anticipation is growing for a race that has been one of the iconic events of Italian motorsport for over a century.
The 2026 edition, in addition to the uphill speed, counts towards the Coppa Italia Slalom di Prima Zona (First Zone Slalom Cup). It will see the protagonists of the two specialties compete along a 4.2 km stretch of the Moncenisio State Road 25, which passes through the town of Giaglione. It features a 305-meter elevation change (from 675 to 980 meters above sea level), an average gradient of 8.3%, an average road width of 7.5 meters, and 15 cone positions for the Slalom event, which will not be present on the uphill. The route follows the initial stretch of the original historic 22.5-kilometer route, which ran from Susa to Lake Moncenisio, now in French territory.
The race's placement at the end of May brings the event to a particularly favorable time, just before the summer season, further enhancing the Susa Valley area and increasing the event's tourist appeal. The sporting and technical checks will take place on Friday, May 29th from 3 pm to 8 pm in the Legends Arena on Corso Couvert 31 in Susa, and will continue the following day from 10 am to 12 pm. The official two-round trials for the Historic Car Speed category will start at 12 pm on Saturday, May 30th, followed by a reconnaissance for the Slalom competitors. The first heat of the Historic Car Speed category is scheduled for Sunday, May 31st at 9 am, while the first heat of the Slalom will take place at 1 pm, with the subsequent heats to follow. The awards ceremony for the Historic Cars category will be held at 3:30 PM at the Legends Arena, with the Slalom race at 7:00 PM.
To allow the competition to proceed smoothly, the Strada Statale 25 del Moncenisio will be closed on Saturday, May 30th from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM and on Sunday, May 31st from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
Over the course of its long history, the Susa-Moncenisio has seen victories from some of the most important protagonists of Italian hill climbs, including Mauro Nesti, Pasquale Irlando, Ezio Baribbi, and Giuseppe Tambone. The first historic winner was Vincenzo Lancia. In 2025, the overall victory went to Emanuel Traina, who was absent from the 2026 edition due to competing in other championships. The 2026 edition also represents a further step in a three-year revitalization project promoted by the organizers, Supergara and Legends Arena, with the aim of restoring the historic Piedmontese competition to the high levels of prestige that have made it famous in the international motorsport scene. This growth path aims to consolidate the Susa-Moncenisio as a benchmark event for historic and modern motorsports, while also enhancing the territory and the sporting tradition of the Susa Valley.
