Orrido di chianocco, 10050 Chianocco
The Reserve of the Orrido di Chianocco, established to protect the only definitely spontaneous holm oak station in Piedmont, extends over 49 hectares in the territory of the municipality of Chianocco.
It includes the eponymous ravine, a deep incision about ten meters wide and about 50 meters deep, carved by the Prebèc stream in the carbonate rocks that characterize this part of the Susa Valley and a small part of the overlying valley.
The southern exposure and the climate, characterized by rather high summer temperatures, scarce snowfall, and limited rainfall, have allowed the survival of various plants considered typical of the Mediterranean climate, rare in Piedmont and on the pre-alpine reliefs.
Recent archaeological excavations have documented the archaeological interest of the area with the discovery of remains dating from a period ranging from the Eneolithic (4th-3rd millennium BC) to the Middle Bronze Age (about 1500 BC).
