Foresto, 10059 Susa

The chapel is located on the outskirts of the Foresto district in the municipality of Bussoleno, in an area called della Posta, commemorating the fact that this place was used for the stop and change of horses and carriages traveling the ancient road to France. It consists of a single room, with a gable facade topped by a roof made of lose. The facade features the remnants of an Annunciation, recovered during the last restoration, partially legible. Inside, it houses a cycle of 15th-century frescoes dedicated to the stories of the childhood of the Virgin taken from the apocryphal Protoevangelium of James. The creation of the cycle is attributed to the hand of Antoine de Lonhy. The main iconographic theme is distributed on the vaults of the chapel, where the scenes of the Expulsion of Joachim from the Temple, Joachim’s Dream in the desert (noteworthy is the similarity between the urban conformation of the city of Susa and that of the walled city depicted in the background of the scene), the Meeting of Joachim and Anna at the Golden Gate of Jerusalem, and the Birth of the Virgin can be seen. The apse area is occupied by an intense depiction of the Pietà, while the side walls host a series of saints distributed as follows: to the north, Saint Peter Martyr, Saint Bartholomew, Saint Catherine of Alexandria, Saint Sebastian, a Benedictine saint (Saint Maurus?); on the south wall: a Benedictine saint (Saint Justus?), Saint Anthony Abbot, Saint Roch, a bishop saint (Saint Blaise?). The presence of the Benedictine saints depicted on the northern wall testifies to the ancient connection of the Foresto Community with the Benedictine abbey of St. Justus of Susa, to whose spiritual care it was subjected.
