During the reign of Philippe II d'Orléans, following the death of Louis XIV, French society underwent a period of great change.
The nobility returned to experience pleasure and luxury in Parisian salons alongside the wealthy bourgeoisie. Ideas related to hedonism, rationalism, and individual freedom spread.
A debate arose about the relationship between personal interest and the collective good. Two opposing visions emerged: a frugal and rigorous society or a society founded on luxury and economic freedom. This cultural and political debate is summarized in Jean-François de Saint-Lambert's "Essay on Luxury" from 1764.
